The Ateneu Popular d’Esplugues is a community facility created in 2014 with the aim of responding to the lack of spaces for meeting, training, and self-organization in a city marked for decades by a dormitory town model. The project was born from the desire of a group of residents to build collective alternatives in the face of social and vital uncertainty, and to do so through mutual support, direct participation, and involvement in the immediate environment.
Since its inception, the Ateneu has established itself as a meeting point for Esplugues' associative fabric, open to organizations, collectives, and individuals who wish to promote cultural, educational, critical thinking, or social transformation activities. It has become a stable hub for workshops, talks, assemblies, cultural evenings, and alternative leisure initiatives.
The space operates through self-management and assembly, with open meetings every Thursday night and a functioning that promotes co-responsibility and horizontal participation. The Ateneu is part of the Network of Ateneus and Casals of the Catalan Countries, which strengthens its connection with similar projects throughout the territory and broadens its perspective beyond the local scope.
Regarding the facilities, the venue has a bar, a versatile space that can be adapted to various formats, small concerts, film forums, presentations, debates, and a projector that facilitates audiovisual and educational activities. Over time, the Ateneu has consolidated itself as a benchmark cultural and social agent in Esplugues, contributing to the generation of alternatives, community building, and the promotion of spaces for citizen participation.
