El romànic, objecte de desig

Book presentation: El romànic, objecte de desig. La fascinació del patrimoni des de la Renaixença fins a l’era digital.

The valuation of Catalan Romanesque art, and its representative perception, has undergone substantial changes from the end of the 19th century to the present day. The Renaixença marked the beginning of a growing interest in valuing the study of Romanesque heritage, considered the cradle of the nation. Since then, this style has undergone a constant process of heritage-making, understood as the symbolic appropriation of a specific artistic manifestation in an identity key. Beyond constituting a source of identity, Romanesque is currently a heritage with a "principle of use" to which society attributes various values: artistic and aesthetic, of commemoration and memory, historical, economic, cognitive, pedagogical, spiritual, and even therapeutic.

This book traces the most important episodes in the history of Catalan Romanesque heritage, such as the discovery, safeguarding and diaspora, the interest of American collecting, touristification, social and institutional agents, and the role of museums and new technologies, topics that help to understand why, even today, Catalan Romanesque is an object of desire. It is a narrative about the social construction of heritage and that explores the relationship between history and memory.
