This June 4th marks Corpus Christi, a festivity that, beyond religiosity, is laden with popular culture and tradition. The celebration, full of symbolism, is the product of 700 years of history, making it a highly significant festival for Barcelona residents.
Among the festive elements, flower carpets, bell ringing, dances, and the procession stand out, but what captures much of the attention each year are the "ous com balla" (dancing eggs). This, consisting of an empty egg that appears to dance on a water fountain, is an emblem of the festival in Barcelona. It is known that the "ou com balla" has been part of Corpus in Barcelona since at least 1636, when records show that the Cathedral bought eggs to set up the contraption, although some claim the tradition dates back much further.
For centuries, numerous interpretations have been made about the meaning and origins of the "ou com balla." Some identify it with the figure of the Eucharist, fertility, or plenitude. Others say it is a reference to time and continuous movement, and for some, it is simply an entertainment game. What no one doubts, however, is that the "ou com balla" is a deeply rooted tradition in Barcelona and Catalonia.
Centuries after the establishment of this tradition, this 2026, about twenty venues will offer, from June 4th to 7th, the "ou com balla" to delight visitors.
