This July, the cycle of Concerts sota la palmera (Concerts under the palm tree) returns to the Centre Cívic Casa Orlandai in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Barcelona. It is a summer program that invites you to enjoy live music every Thursday at 8 p.m. under the palm tree in the courtyard of this cultural facility. It is, in short, a musical event to discover emerging artists.
The cycle kicked off last Thursday to the rhythm of Lluki Valverde. With his “band of ambassadors of good vibes and rhythm,” the singer-songwriter, who is also a saxophonist and backing vocalist for La Ludwig Band, performed songs from his solo project. Next week will be the turn of Grup de ties, which is, indeed, a group formed by girls. With influences revolving around rock, punk, and garage, they write songs, as they state, “because they have fun, because they are approaching thirty, and for the beers after rehearsal.”
On the 16th, Glosa càustica will perform, offering an immersion into improvised oral poetry. The audience and the environment inspire the group to sing verses over traditional melodies from various parts of the Catalan-speaking territory, as well as newly created ones. Glosa is a poetic and musical genre that consists of improvising verses over a melody following a specific rhyme and metric structure. This tradition, practically extinct in the Principality a quarter of a century ago, is increasingly present again in squares, bars, festivals, and after-dinner gatherings.
On July 23, it will be the turn of the Iriexada popular, a collective celebration ritual where the audience stops being a spectator to make Irieix's song their own. The singer-songwriter advises bringing an instrument from home to join this multitudinous band to sing with the songbook in hand. Irieix is the author of Cuques i feres, created for the Barcelona City Council's Christmas campaign. Finally, on July 30, the anniversary of the Cafè de la Casa Orlandai will be celebrated.
All activities are free and no prior reservation is required.
