Colla de Geganters de Sant Joan Despí

The Colla de Geganters de Sant Joan Despí was founded in 1983 thanks to the initiative of Culture technician Salvador Gimeno and the support of neighbors and the City Council. Since then, the giants have been protagonists of the Festa Major, participate in gatherings throughout Catalonia, and have contributed to consolidating a tradition that is part of the municipality's festive heritage.

The Colla de Geganters of Sant Joan Despí has its origins in 1983, when a group of residents and the City Council joined forces to bring to life a project driven by the Cultura Salvador Gimeno Chaparro. His work was decisive in shaping an initiative that has become one of the most visible elements of the city's popular culture.

Since their creation, the giants have become a festive symbol and an undisputed part of the image of the Festa Major, presiding over the entrance to the Town Hall and participating in all the opening speeches. The group has paraded through the streets of Sant Joan Despí in numerous processions, often accompanied by figures from all over the country, and has represented the municipality at giant gatherings in Catalonia and beyond.

The internal evolution of the group has also been significant. On their first outings, the giants wore white shirts, but it was soon agreed to adopt shirts with the group's crest and the distinctive red scarf. In parallel, the giants' children learned to play timpani and gralles and became some of the youngest musicians on the Catalan giant scene, contributing to bringing the giants to life in performances throughout the region.

The Colla has been part of the Agrupació de Colles de Geganters of Catalonia and has been active in the Baix Llobregat federation, participating in "Ciutats Geganteres" (Gegant Cities) and events such as the proclamation of the regional "Hereu" (Heir). Between 1988 and 2020, it organized the traditional "Tres Tombs" festival, an event deeply rooted in the city. Those years left a legacy of stories, overcome difficulties, and great dedication to keeping popular culture alive.

Despite internal tensions that led to the creation of a parallel entity and the departure of some of its members, the Colla de Geganters de Sant Joan Despí has remained active, preserving the tradition that saw it born. With years of experiences, cold, rain, wind, and kilometers traveled, the group maintains its unwavering commitment to spreading the festival and the "gegant" spirit wherever it goes
