Magalí Sare, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, has presented this year a radically original proposal: Descasada, an album that explores the dark side of marriage combining elements of traditional songs from all over the world. After three years of research and composition, and having recorded the entire album at home with the help of her partner, Sebastià Gris, Sare is now bringing the project to the stage.
«The starting point of this album, which is the climax of all the projects I have had so far, was pure and hard research», explains the singer-songwriter. «I wanted to put together a repertoire in different languages, to explain that the figure of the 'descasada' existed all over the world. To be able to stop this infinite research at some point, a brutal tool was to compose in the manner of certain songs I was finding. If I found a traditional lyric and I loved it, I kept it. But I also added a rhythm that I liked from some songs that were sung I don't know where. And in what language did I write it? Well, in another. Each song is a quite convoluted path».
But what exactly is a 'descasada'? «It's a woman who is perhaps socially marginalized and is left without a husband because she has to stay at her parents' house all her life, or, on the contrary, an absolutely independent woman who has her own business and doesn't need a husband for anything. The 'descasament' can also be an internal attitude of disillusionment, of falling out of love, of disenchantment...», Sare points out. She herself defines herself, in a way, as a 'descasada': «I don't marry any specific musical genre or any trend. This sometimes makes me feel very free, but other times it also makes me feel alone or misunderstood».
Since each track on the album is performed with instruments from different places, Sare has had to make exclusive arrangements for the live show. «Sometimes I think I'll have to record the live show and release another album. But it's also good for people to understand that the live show is one thing and the album is another. In this concert there is a trio or a string quintet, I am in the middle, and behind there can be a choir of forty people. They not only sing, they also recite or shout. And they can be placed in different ways», the artist advances.
This summer, we will be able to see Descasada in these various formats throughout Catalonia. Sare will sing accompanied by the trio at the Poesia i + festival in Vilassar de Mar on July 4, at the Nits musicals a les Pedanies de Belltall on July 18, at the Monestir de Pedralbes on July 23, at the Potries Music Fest on August 9, and at the Perifèria Cultural de Peramola on August 14. As for the quintet format, there will be concerts on July 2 at the Festival Llegendes de Sant Martí de Tous, on July 10 in Lloret de Vistalegre, and on July 28 at Dansàneu. And those who want the complete experience with the choir can go to the FIMPT of Vilanova i la Geltrú on July 12 or to Les Santes de Mataró on July 26. In addition, Sare will be touring Europe with the show Retornar, together with Manel Fortià.
«Perhaps I am not an artist that they play on the radio every day, but live shows are my strong point», assures Sare. «I think I have a very accentuated visual, performative part. Sometimes they have told me that I look like a singer-actress. I don't know why, but it's like that. It comes from within me. I am shy, in general. What happens to me on stage is that suddenly there are no laws, anything goes. I can sing horribly, I can make ugly faces, I can make jokes and wordplays, or I can be an angel fallen from heaven. I love it! I have a lot of faith that the live shows will be a profound experience, that they will make you leave there wanting not to look at your phone, connected with your emotions and with reality».
