The city of Sant Joan Despí prepares to experience, one more year, one of the most emblematic initiatives of the local calendar. From monday until Thursday, the campaign ‘Sant Joan Despí in bloom’ will once again fill balconies, terraces and patios with color and life with the distribution of more than 13,000 plants among the residents.
Driven by the City Council of Sant Joan Despí, this proposal stands out for its uniqueness: few municipal initiatives manage, at the same time, to foster urban greenery, strengthen the sense of community, and actively involve citizens in the care of the environment. With more than 30 years of trajectory, the campaign has consolidated itself as a symbol of the arrival of spring in the municipality.

This year, geraniums, dimorphothecas (a variety of daisy) and mint will be distributed. The distribution will be done through vouchers that citizens will receive at home and that they can exchange at different points enabled in the five neighborhoods, at times designed to facilitate access.
Beyond the distribution, the initiative once again incorporates the Balcony Contest, which will award the most outstanding spaces in three categories: exterior balcony, interior balcony and spaces that promote biodiversity, such as urban gardens, aromatic gardens, insect hotels, etc. In each category, two prizes will be awarded, thus recognizing the creativity and environmental commitment of the participants.
Practical workshops to foster neighbourhood creativity
As a novelty of this edition, the campaign takes a step towards the pedagogical aspect with three training sessions to give ideas to the residents who wish to participate in the contest. The workshops will address topics such as nutritious and nectar-bearing plants (April 14), pests and ecological treatments (April 21) and the role of pollinators and bioindicators (April 28). All sessions include practical activities, such as planting a planter, the creation of a bird feeder and the construction of an insect hotel, respectively.
With this combination of community action, environmental education and biodiversity promotion, ‘Sant Joan Despí en flor’ remains as an original and benchmark proposal within the local scope, capable of transforming the urban landscape and strengthening the link between citizens and their environment.
