The historical and political moment that Catalonia, and therefore L'Hospitalet, was experiencing in 1932 undoubtedly led to the birth of the Ateneu. On April 14, 1931, the Republic had been proclaimed, and the Statute of Núria was approved by the Cortes, albeit reduced, on September 9, 1932... we can therefore say that it was a time of hope for change.
In the city, there was a group of young people with social, cultural, and national concerns who had not been able to express themselves freely until then, motivated by certain events and situations occurring in L'Hospitalet at the time, such as the increase in population due to strong immigration, unemployment, various shortages, for example in healthcare, and especially in education.
One of these young people was Jaume Audí i Matas. He was the first to think of creating a non-political, cultural, and popular entity. He spoke about it with his older brother Daniel, and some of his friends, Blai Guillén Ornaque, Carles Enrich, Carles Pié i Amat, and some others. Lluís Casas i Balletbò and some of the young people from the Centre neighborhood soon joined them.
