The Molins de Rei Museum was created in 1953 within the Can Samaranch Textile Factory, an initiative by Enric Madorell i Claramunt (1897-1990), the factory's director and one of the most prominent figures in the town's history. Following a donation of Coptic textiles from the 2nd and 3rd centuries by Mr. Francesc Samaranch to his director, Madorell proposed to his colleagues at the Club Samaranch the creation of a small textile museum. This museum was later expanded to include other aspects of Molins de Rei's history and culture due to the growing incorporation of new sections. A call was then made to all residents of the town who wished to contribute to the Museum, and the response from the people of Molins was very positive. In this way, along with pieces from another local group that had already disbanded (Amics Studi), the Municipal Museum of Molins de Rei was established.
The Samaranch Club Room, designated as a Museum, gradually filled with visitors and new contributions from many townspeople who embraced this institution and donated a large quantity of objects and family mementos. On the other hand, a task of collecting elements of popular culture from the town's houses began. The Museum was formed in parallel with the transformation process the town was undergoing: buildings were being demolished, and materials considered to have historical or testimonial interest for the Museum were collected. In addition to these tasks, archaeological surveys were initiated throughout the area of influence of Molins de Rei. Thanks to this work by the Museum, the Provincial Commission for Excavations appointed the Museum's Directorate as the Excavations Delegation for Baix Llobregat.
The space soon proved insufficient and it was decided to look for another location, with the City Council taking charge. In 1968, the Museum became municipal and finally moved to its current location. Throughout all these years and up to the present day, many people have collaborated on numerous occasions and in various roles to move this institution forward, a respectful testament to the passage of time, culture, and the important events of Molins de Rei.
