The courtyard of the Centre Cívic El Sortidor, in the Poble-sec neighborhood of Barcelona, hosts this afternoon at 7 p.m. a Sound Totem. An original activity with which a vertical sculpture will be created with pieces of leftover seasonal vegetables and fruits, which will take the form of an edible totem that will be musically activated.
The initiative is by Tiberi Club, a creative studio born in Barcelona around 2018 and formed by professionals from diverse disciplines such as architecture, performing arts, design and communication, united by their passion for gastronomy. They are Helena Fradera, Miquel Ruiz, Roger Vila and Rocío Iglesias.
All four wanted to explore cuisine as a cultural and creative space beyond traditional gastronomy. Over time, they have developed art direction and creative catering projects for brands and private institutions, as well as their own initiatives in different spaces of the city. Among these projects is the Tiberi Bar, opened about three years ago in the Poble-sec neighborhood. In this area of Barcelona they also have their studio, located next to Plaça Espanya.
In this context, the managers of Tiberi Club proposed this activity to the Civic Center El Sortidor as a way to connect with their closest environment and also, because as they themselves explain, from time to time they like "to do activities linked to public institutions" to maintain their "connection with the city".
Objective: fight against food waste
The activity of the Tòtem Sonor is born from a reflection on food waste and from the will to work on this problem from a creative perspective. The project proposes the construction of a vertical sculpture made with leftover seasonal fruits and vegetables, collected with the collaboration of the Fundació Espigoladors. All in all, with the will to put the topic on the table through play: "As in all our projects, there is a part of reviewing tradition and ways of doing where design is very important, as is play."
One of the objectives of their proposal is to address this problem without a moralizing approach. In this sense, the collective opts for an open and participatory experience: “We were interested in raising awareness and generating reaction from a more playful side. It seems that these problems are only shown from a ‘you can't do this, you can't do that’, and it seemed interesting to us to collectively build a totem of gleaned food", they reflect.
Starting from gleaned fruit and vegetables
As the structure grows, a sound dimension will also be activated: the totem will function as a participatory instrument that will generate sounds during the construction process. Once the activity is finished, the food used will not be thrown away, but will be made available to the public so they can take it and consume it. In this way, the project closes the complete food cycle, from waste to food reuse.
The activity is open to everyone and you can reserve your spot here. Beyond this project, the collective is also preparing the new Tiberi Quiosc, which they plan to open soon at the Museu Marès and about which they will soon provide more details.
