There are places that tell a city's story without needing monuments. Municipal markets are an example: spaces where local commerce coexists with conversations, routines, and the bonds that shape neighborhood life. In Esplugues de Llobregat, the Can Vidalet Municipal Market is recovering this community spirit and reclaiming an idea that for decades had defined these facilities: that of the market as a square.

People no longer go there just to buy freshly picked fruit, fresh fish, meat, cured meats, or cheeses. They also go to listen to music while sharing a tapa, to see children discovering where the food that reaches the table comes from, to participate in a workshop, or simply to meet up with neighbors. The market is once again an everyday stage where culture and neighborhood life naturally meet.

This new stage is the result of a program that, since last autumn, fills the market's aisles with cultural, educational, and social activities. From gatherings to celebrate the usual dates on the festive calendar, such as Castanyada, Christmas, or Carnival, to new initiatives, such as the Sant Joan coca workshop or Les Tapes Musicals, an event where more than 500 free tapas are distributed to the rhythm of live music.

The program, conceived jointly by the City Council, the market's new management, and the stallholders' association, allows the market to recover, for a few hours, that atmosphere of a main square where everyone has a place.

The market, another classroom

The program has also turned the market into a learning space. In recent months, dozens of students from various schools have visited its stalls to learn about the operation of a traditional market, discover seasonal foods, understand the value of local products, and reflect on healthy eating habits. A way of reading the territory through its flavors, its trades, and the people who keep them alive every day.

This educational role coexists with an increasingly marked social vocation. Several stalls have joined the network of purple points this 2026, reaffirming the facility's commitment to equality and the prevention of sexist violence.

In parallel, the market has hosted talks aimed at the elderly on preventing scams in in-person and digital purchases, periodic blood pressure checks promoted by the Red Cross, awareness activities against food waste, children's workshops, and various solidarity initiatives aimed at raising funds for social causes.

In a time when purchases can be made with a click, the market reminds us that there are experiences that only exist when people share the same space. And it is precisely here that municipal markets recover their oldest and, at the same time, most contemporary value: being places where, in addition to buying, one still learns, converses, celebrates, and builds community.
