Marc Menéndez (Gràcia, Barcelona, 2000) is a young playwright and theatre director in his final year of Playwriting and Directing at the Institut del Teatre. He dreams that the play he premiered this year with his company, Biombos, will represent his leap into the professional circuit. He also collaborates with the children's and family theatre company Embroutats.
How would you define yourself?
As a playwright and director. I've always been writing things, I've never stopped.
How did you start?
As a child, I was very theatrical, I did magic, and my family took me to the theatre a lot. And one thing led to another. I studied at the Nancy Tuñón school and then at El Timbal, and there, because I was interested in writing and directing, I created the theatre company Biombos with classmates. In March 2019, we premiered our first show, Nora.
Have you performed your shows?
Since Biombos is a company formed in Gràcia, we always premiere our shows at Espai Jove La Fontana, where we are very well received. But the play we've toured the most has been Radiografia. We performed at Sala Fiveller (Mollet del Vallès), Sala Roser Carrau (Vilassar de Mar), and Centre Cívic Boca Nord (Horta-Guinardó, Barcelona).
Who do you admire?
As a historic company, I would say Els Joglars, for the artistic code they play with. And among the current ones, la Calòrica, a theater company that has me captivated. They have worked tirelessly like no one else, and it's great to have a reference that tells you success can be achieved.
What is your dream venue?
I have a special fondness for the Sala Flyhard in Sants. I like the intimacy it offers and its programming. Besides, within the professional circuit of Barcelona venues, there are small ones that have a lot of charm, like the Atrium or the Versus Glòries.
