Joan Vinyoli is one of the most prominent figures of contemporary Catalan poetry. Works like Wind of brass, All is now and nothing or Now that it's late are part of the canon of Catalan literature. His literary trajectory, marked by existential reflection, the passage of time and the search for meaning, has been especially reclaimed from recent decades as one of the most profound and influential of the 20th century.

In the personal sphere, Vinyoli maintains a connection with Sant Joan Despí, a municipality that has dedicated a street to him. The poet lived there for a period of his life, a fact that has left its mark on the local memory and that explains this recognition in the urban space.

Specifically, Vinyoli lived in the municipality between the years 1919 and 1922, for almost four years of his childhood. His arrival in the municipality occurred at a complicated time for the family: shortly after the birth of his sister Carme, his father died, a fact that left the family in a precarious economic situation. Faced with this situation, they moved to Sant Joan Despí, where they first lived in the village center and later in a humble small house next to the train tracks, in a location that cannot be determined exactly today, but which would be located in the vicinity, or possibly on the same route, of the current Joan Vinyoli street, very close to the railway line.

Sant Joan Despí is not the only municipality that has dedicated a street to him: Santa Coloma de Farners, where the poet spent his summers, also remembers him in its street directory. Other Catalan municipalities such as Barcelona, Girona, Sabadell, Roses or Vic, among others, have also dedicated public spaces to him, a sign of the widespread recognition of his figure throughout the territory.

The cultural map of Sant Joan Despí

The presence of Vinyoli is not an isolated case. In fact, Sant Joan Despí has an extensive cultural map in its streets, with nearly twenty streets dedicated to prominent figures in literature, music, architecture or visual arts.

The most important bulk corresponds to literature, with names like Joan Maragall or Jacint Verdaguer, as well as contemporary authors like Miquel Martí i Pol or Montserrat Roig. Also present are prominent figures of Spanish literature like Federico García Lorca or Antonio Machado.

The music and choral culture also have a relevant weight there, with streets dedicated to Enric Granados, Anselm Clavé or Lluís Millet, as well as Oriol Martorell. In the field of architecture, modernism is present there with names like Antoni Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Montaner or Josep Maria Jujol. To these are added artists like Joan Miró or the filmmaker Fructuós Gelabert.

This set draws a street naming system with a clear commitment to Catalan culture and turns the streets into a space of memory and cultural dissemination in the daily lives of residents. However, this snapshot also reveals a certain imbalance: female presence continues to be minoritary, despite prominent names like Rodoreda, Roig or Maria Aurèlia Capmany, an aspect that opens the debate on the future evolution of the street naming system.
